A public intellectual par excellence, Thornleys dynamism and versatility, coupled with an intellectual curiosity and dedication to political activism, led him to his now-famous association with RT. Appearing frequently on the programmes The Professors and Division, he later joined the team of 7-Days (the PrimeTime of its day) in 1966 as a presenter. No longer content to simply comment on Irish politics, in 1969 Thornley topped the polls and was elected Labour Party TD for Dublin North-west constituency. Before he lost his seat in 1977, Thornley served as an MEP for four years. To be sure, the mere mention of his name sparks an instant reaction in anyone who was witness to his unique and fascinating career.
